"I Dismember Momma" is a film that stands out, largely due to the impressive visual effects work by "Rollie," whose real name is Bryan Brown. Apparently, the US Government was so impressed with his abilities that they hired him to fabricate evidence of a murder, intending to place the man into witness protection afterward. Simultaneously, New York Police Detective "McCarthy" (Brian Dennehy) is looking into this very crime but finds himself frustrated by the lack of cooperation from his federal counterparts. As things progress, it becomes apparent that something isn't right, and blackmail, extortion, and genuine murder enter the picture. Soon, our special effects artist has to rely on all his skills just to survive, as he’s unsure who he can trust. The viewers have a slightly better understanding of who is manipulating events than he does, but this doesn’t ultimately matter because the plot quickly descends from implausible to absurd, particularly when his handler, "Col. Mason" (Mason Adams), reveals his true nature. Brown was well-suited for “Breaker Morant” (1980), yet otherwise I've struggled to understand why he became a film actor, beyond his appearance. He possesses an intriguing look, but his acting feels as artificial as many of the props used in the movie, and he delivers the unremarkable lines without much expression. It’s essentially an adventure story—just add some gunfire, a few fake mustaches, and plenty of rain. Perhaps next time, instead of witness protection, it would be better to simply take a seat in the Colosseum; it would likely be safer, and definitely more entertaining to observe.
