Sally Field takes on an unexpected, tougher part, and she manages to deliver a decent performance portraying a mother forced to hear about her seventeen-year-old daughter’s rape and murder over the phone. “Karen” and her husband "Mack" (Ed Harris) suffer more distress when a procedural error leads to the arrestee's release due to a legal loophole. Determined for retribution, she trains herself, including learning how to use a firearm, seeking what the justice system couldn’t provide. Kiefer Sutherland ("Doob") is the unpleasant man who becomes her target. The story of revenge seemed like it could have created a stronger foundation for this film, but unfortunately, the filmmaking wanders and the movie quickly loses the momentum it initially had. Field conveys a sense of believability in her acting; she effectively portrays the anguish of a mother. Harris and Sutherland, though, appear too infrequently, with the latter unable to bring any real threat to his character. Despite occasional moments of violence, it frequently falls into overly dramatic territory and concludes exactly as anticipated from the beginning. Ultimately, this isn't much better than an average TV thriller that I probably won’t remember even a week from now.
