Sasha (Viktoria Miroshnichenko) keeps something hidden from her girlfriend Sonja (Tina Dalakishvilli). She creates labels at home detailing instances of Russian army abuses in Ukraine, then places them on food items while shopping. When their eighty-six year old neighbor Galina (Lilyan Malkina) notices one as she’s buying sugar, she informs the authorities, who quickly arrest Sasha. The officer suggests pleading ignorance and hoping for a lighter sentence, warning that she could otherwise face eight years in prison. A degrading search and a discussion with Sonja might lead her to follow this advice, or perhaps she will trust a legal system that seems unlikely to imprison someone for affixing labels to just four products. Despite its short length of fifteen minutes, the film doesn’t truly resonate on the important topic it addresses. There's a lot of playful movement, but when it reaches the crucial point, it rushes through what should have been the most powerful section and concludes with a text slide explaining further events. It presents a disheartening view of how severely a system can punish something so seemingly minor, and I wasn’t aware that the heart-hand symbol is prohibited in Russia.
