_Extraction_ recently arrived on Netflix and features Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, once in Special Forces but now working as a mercenary. His latest assignment involves rescuing the child of a drug lord—a plot that seems familiar, like many other action films, yet possesses some unique qualities. The narrative follows a predictable path with its straightforward story, a hero burdened by a sad history, and plenty of fights, car chases, and explosions. However, what elevates it is the sheer quality of the action sequences. The film came together thanks to Sam Hargrave and the Russo brothers, all of whom made significant contributions to the Marvel films and clearly know how to construct impactful action set pieces. This expertise shines through in expertly planned fight scenes that recall John Wick but with a more grounded feel reminiscent of Jason Bourne. There are confrontations within confined spaces, others spanning multiple floors of an apartment building, and still others unfolding on city streets. The filmmakers transport the viewer wherever the action demands, creating a sense of immersion. This is particularly noticeable in a car chase scene that we stopped to watch again because it was so well executed. Presented as one long, continuous shot, the camera moves seamlessly from outside the vehicle to inside and back out, circling around and even peering through the rear window—it was truly impressive. I’ve seen behind-the-scenes footage revealing how they captured these shots; Hargrave actually secured himself to a car hood to get the angles – a perk of having a Stunt Coordinator as Director, it seems. The final product only intensified an already thrilling sequence. Ultimately, _Extraction_ is a very exciting experience from beginning to end. While the plot may be thin, the primary reason to see it is for its exceptional action.
