This unexpectedly hilarious Irish ghost story, _Extra Ordinary_ (the reason for the two-word title is explained in the movie), marks a delightful debut from writer/directors Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman. While there may be other examples of Irish comedy mixed with supernatural elements, it’s hard to think of one that compares to Neil Jordan's _High Spirits_ (1988), which relied heavily on jokes about Irish stereotypes. _Extra Ordinary_, however, focuses instead on the inherent decency of its characters and, in the case of the villain, his unusual desire for musical success through summoning Astaroth. It’s a film that embraces familiar tropes, particularly the idea of ordinary people facing extraordinary situations, consistently finding humor in how out of their depth they are. The comedy is understated but irreverent, and while some nuances might be lost on international audiences, it largely works because it avoids relying solely on Irish-specific jokes. The story unfolds in a rural Irish town where Rose Dooley (Agatha Ellis) can communicate with ghosts and assists her famous paranormal researcher father, Vincent Dooley (Risteard Cooper). Following an incident involving a dog, a bus, and a haunted pothole that claims Vincent’s life, Rose vows to abandon her abilities. Twenty years later, she's a driving instructor who is lonely but friendly, with her sister Sailor (Terri Chandler) as her only real companion. Despite receiving daily requests for help from those seeking contact with the dead, Rose refuses to get involved. Meanwhile, Martin Martin (Barry Ward) and his daughter Sarah (Emma Coleman) are haunted by Martin’s deceased wife, Bonnie, leading him to seek Rose's assistance under false pretenses. When he reveals his true intentions, Rose initially declines. Simultaneously, one-hit wonder Christian Winter (Will Forte), living in Ireland to avoid taxes, kidnaps a local virgin for a blood moon sacrifice to Astaroth.
