The concept of personal choice doesn’t seem to hold much weight within the story's confines. It’s another David Cronenberg film that sparks disagreement, not only among general moviegoers but even amongst his biggest supporters. The storyline is rather bizarre, centering on Jennifer Jason Leigh as a prominent game developer. During testing of her new virtual reality creation with a group of participants, an assassination attempt forces her to flee with Ted Pikul (Jude Law), who works in marketing. Carrying the prototype for the innovative game, they have to navigate its digital landscape, confronting the puzzles and dangers that now pursue them. Returning to writing solely from his own imagination, eXistenZ sees Cronenberg pleased to be creating a more authentic work reflecting his unusual sensibilities. However, the rise of virtual reality films and realistic themes coincided with the film's release, leading some to view it as capitalizing on trends. This criticism seems unwarranted, because it remains distinctive; Cronenberg combines visceral imagery with imaginative visuals to depict gaming scenarios in a disorienting way, full of futuristic energy. He elicits strong performances from Leigh (who has excellent hair) and Law, while the plot is consistently complex enough to require close attention and potentially offer unexpected turns. It’s not his finest work, but it's still clever and quirky, convoluted and strange, unsettling and indirect. It remains a distinctly Cronenberg creation. 8/10
