It's possible to describe this film as if it combined elements of Friday the 13th and The Exorcist, although that comparison isn’t entirely accurate because The Exorcist remains a significantly better movie, even considering its age. This isn't necessarily a bad film, but it doesn't particularly stand out either; it delivers exactly what you would anticipate. Essentially, it involves a group of incredibly foolish teenagers drinking and engaging in unbelievably dumb and nonsensical actions while a supernatural force eliminates them through various bloody incidents. Considering the genre it occupies, I’d say this movie is reasonably okay. A collection of ridiculously stupid, drug-using teens isn't exactly ideal source material for a truly excellent film. It’s hard to understand why horror filmmakers keep returning to this particular theme. Also, given how much alcohol and drugs these characters consume, they should probably be stumbling around most of the time. Some viewers would appreciate a well-crafted, intelligent horror movie occasionally, but if that's what you're searching for, this isn’t it. Exeter follows a familiar formula. The usual group of incredibly foolish teenagers—perhaps with one exception—decides to hold a party at an abandoned asylum with a disturbing past. The asylum is a depressing and filthy wreck, so the reason anyone would want to throw a party there is puzzling. Alcohol and drugs are consumed freely, and predictably, these characters decide to perform some sort of dark ritual. As expected, this triggers a series of unpleasant events and chaos. These teenagers mostly act in the expected insane, illogical, and absurd manner as supernatural occurrences begin to unfold around them. Understandably, their numbers start to decrease over time due to various more or less spectacular and bloody episodes involving sharp and blunt instruments, and body parts being detached from where they belong. It's not the worst teenage horror movie I’ve encountered. Aside from the illogical and silly behavior—which was clearly written into the script—the acting isn’t terrible, and the film is generally well-executed with decent special effects and a suitably dark and sinister atmosphere within the decaying asylum. As a horror film and a source of gore, it's acceptable enough. However, don't expect to be frightened; the movie is quite predictable, and the story mainly serves as a means to present a series of gruesome scenes at regular intervals.
