This 1997 film from Marco Brambilla features Alicia Silverstone as an unusual, affluent young woman who stages her own disappearance to gain the notice of a distant father. The story involves a strange connection with a car thief portrayed by Benicio Del Toro and the recruitment of an even more peculiar figure, “Uncle Ray,” played by Christopher Walken, to locate her. Silverstone was nineteen years old during filming and gaining popularity after roles like the provocative teenager in "The Crush" (1993), the fashionable high schooler in “Clueless” (1995), a young detective in “True Crime” (1995), and a superheroine in “Batman & Robin” (1997). "Excess Baggage" marked her debut film following an expensive agreement with Columbia Pictures, and reports suggested disagreements between Silverstone and director Brambilla. While it disappointingly loses momentum later on, Silverstone appears to be at her most physically appealing, though she's restricted to wearing essentially the same outfit—tight black pants—throughout. More could have been done with this aspect of her character.
