The film begins with a meteorite striking the desert near Glen Canyon, Arizona. Two university instructors, Dr. Ira Kane and Professor Harry Phineas Block, decide to look into it and poke around the area. There, they find worm-like insects that seem to be from somewhere else entirely. Believing they’ve stumbled upon something worthy of a Nobel Prize, their excitement fades when government officials seize control of the site and push them aside. As these creatures begin to change and develop in Earth's atmosphere, they transform into various alien forms. Soon, the area is teeming with them, leaving the authorities unsure how to contain the situation. Ira, Harry, Wayne, and Allison then step in, hoping to resolve things. Ivan Reitman, who previously directed Ghostbusters 1 & 2, helmed Evolution, a wacky science fiction comedy that successfully delivers on its intentions. The filmmakers made excellent use of the special effects available, presenting everything in Technicolor, and assembled an enthusiastic cast willing to play along with the humor. David Duchovny seems to enjoy shedding his serious X Files persona, Orlando Jones consistently lands the funniest lines, Julianne Moore portrays a character prone to mishaps, and Sean William Scott plays a somewhat clumsy aspiring firefighter. Ted Levine, Dan Ackroyd, Ethan Suplee, and Ty Burrell also contribute to the ensemble. The actors aren’t required for complex performances; it's simply not that type of movie. There is something here for everyone in the family—children will be amazed by the diverse alien creatures, while adults should appreciate some of the jokes. Anyone looking for genuine scientific accuracy will be disappointed, as Evolution satirizes science fiction tropes and goes even further. It earns a rating of 7/10.
