Those familiar with Perón’s ascent to power in Argentina, or who have experienced the quality stage production of "Evita" by Rice and Lloyd Webber, will likely find this film adaptation disappointing. Madonna's acting abilities are limited, and while her vocals handle the musical numbers adequately, her portrayal lacks impact. The supporting cast doesn't fare much better; Jonathan Pryce feels miscast as her president—a rather bland husband—and Jimmy Nail is stiff as singer "Magaldi." Antonio Banderas offers a saving grace with his believable depiction of the narrator "Ché," but beyond that, the movie comes across as visually appealing yet uninspired, strung together from musical numbers and feeling disjointed. It doesn't manage to capture the captivating essence of this remarkable woman who rose from humble beginnings to the Presidential palace; it glosses over the harsh realities and corruption of Argentine politics and ultimately feels like a collection of well-produced music videos featuring strong songs. Some stories are best told on stage, and this is definitely one of them.
