A group of medical students and their partners are asked to spend a weekend at an abandoned orphanage near Los Angeles, as one of them hopes to renovate the building. The place has a dark history, and soon people begin to perish. “Evil Laugh” (1986), directed by Dominick Brascia—who previously appeared in “Friday the 13th V: A New Beginning”—is an unremarkable slasher film. This marked his directorial debut, completed in just one week; he would only direct two other movies afterward. The movie is passable but fairly standard fare. The screenplay could have used some work to develop its possibilities, but that requires funding. As it stands, the characters and plot are disappointingly uninteresting. It’s surprising because all the elements for a good 80s slasher seem to be present. Nevertheless, if you're a fan of this type of movie, there are a few things to appreciate about it; however, it isn’t nearly as enjoyable as “Friday the 13th V.” It doesn’t even measure up to "Island of Blood" (1982) or "April Fool's Day" (1986), which aren’t exactly standouts themselves. Jody Gibson (Tina), Karyn O'Bryan (Betty), and Kim McKamy, also known as Ashlyn Gere (Connie), the lead character, are among the better performances from the female cast. The film has a running time of 1 hour, 28 minutes, and was filmed in Southern California—though I couldn’t find any details about the specific locations. GRADE: C-
