The beginning moments establish what to expect regarding the movie’s rhythm. We see "Takumi" (Hitoshi Omika) gathering firewood and then painstakingly filling plastic bottles with water. His life is one of simple routines, dictated by the necessities of food, warmth, and hydration. It isn't a completely primitive existence, however; modern conveniences like cars and electricity are present, and his unusual daughter "Hana" (Ryo Nishikawa) attends school, though he often forgets to collect her. Local officials and a talent agency have noticed the unspoiled beauty of the area and believe it would be perfect for a development project. A town meeting is held, and two representatives from the city attend, seemingly unaware of the potential consequences of their scheme. Dismissed and rebuffed, their superiors propose a diluted solution: providing a permanent caretaker—a position they intend to offer to "Takumi" as a gesture of goodwill. The story then unfolds with the city people becoming increasingly absorbed in Takumi’s rural lifestyle until he forgets to pick up his daughter, and she disappears. A frantic search ensues as night falls and the temperature drops. Surprisingly, it's the understated conversations and deliberate pacing that elevate the narrative. Themes of balancing progress and nature, the relentless pursuit of profit, and the influence of persuasion all emerge before a somewhat mystical ending that highlights how nature persists regardless of human actions. The young Nishikawa performs with sensitivity as the film presents a distinctive perspective on how humans and their surroundings should coexist.
