It’s disheartening to report that Evil Does Not Exist doesn’t quite live up to its potential as a deeply moving exploration of themes like the natural world, community bonds, uncomplicated living, and the conflict with commercial interests. From a technical standpoint, however, there's little to criticize; Ryusuke Hamaguchi clearly assembled an exceptional team, resulting in beautiful visuals and a carefully crafted musical backdrop that build a detailed and absorbing setting. The core issue stems from what feels like too much trust placed on the viewers’ ability to piece together the narrative and understand the characters' journeys, leading to a conclusion that is jarring but ultimately leaves one feeling strangely unsatisfied.
