Evil Dead Rise manages to offer a fresh take on the established series while still honoring what made it work in the first place. The narrative isn’t particularly intricate and, truthfully, feels somewhat familiar—the central characters stumble upon the Book of the Dead, recite from its pages, and chaos ensues. However, the specifics surrounding this plot are what really distinguish it. The choice of a high-rise building as the setting proved to be inspired, generating an intensely confined atmosphere that was very effective. I thought the earthquake was a clever addition, not only for uncovering the Necronomicon but also for trapping our protagonists. Regarding the cast, the film excels at developing these characters. I found myself genuinely invested in each of them, which made their losses more impactful than they were in Evil Dead (2013). The sense of connection among them was clear and believable, thanks to a truly excellent group of performers. Alyssa Sutherland is easily my favorite Deadite throughout the entire franchise; her maternal portrayal was unsettling, with expressions and behaviors that are pure nightmare fuel. Lily Sullivan also delivered an outstanding performance as the final girl. Her determination to protect the children was impressive, and she had several opportunities to shine within the film. The child actors were generally adequate—nothing exceptional, but they didn’t detract from the overall experience either. The direction stood out to me above all else. Lee Cronin did a remarkable job with unsettling camera work, utilizing subtle movements and reflections. The action sequences were excellent, and the practical effects were outstanding. Numerous scenes elicited physical reactions from me, showcasing incredibly inventive violence alongside truly disturbing blood and injury depictions. It’s certainly on par with Evil Dead (2013) when it comes to gore. While perhaps not the pinnacle of the franchise, I believe this is among the most polished entries. The story has some shortcomings, but the direction, acting, and graphic content firmly establish it as one of the best horror films released this year. Score: 84% ✅ Verdict: Great
