The special effects and sound design are genuinely impressive. Beyond that, I thought the movie felt unoriginal and ultimately a rather low-rent revisiting of a far more enjoyable initial film. It’s becoming difficult to continually reimagine these concepts – they do grow stale, and considering what's happened with the "Halloween" series recently, it seems like they depend too much on an audience that wasn’t present when the originals were first shown in theaters, and who perhaps don’t realize that the performances and script—though never essential to these stories—were more significant than simply relying on elaborately designed creatures whirling around emitting scary noises. It's not awful; it maintains a brisk pace for ninety minutes and might make you hesitant about taking a bath for a while afterward, but there isn't any real feeling of danger or suspense, and truthfully I wasn’t entirely convinced the family weren’t frightening enough on their own—before their guest showed up. It’s perfectly acceptable to watch on television around Halloween with a drink, and it’s the kind of thing you can enjoy again next year without remembering anything about what's going to occur.
