I really don't see what all the fuss is about. While watching this movie, I got a strong feeling that “Army of Darkness” was somehow connected to it, maybe even a sequel or related project, because of the story elements and the fact that Bruce Campbell is in both. The films share some common ground, and you can't ignore that connection. Sam Raimi has definitely established himself as a director known for horror movies, but I honestly think this is one of his weakest efforts. “Evil Dead” is dark, strange, full of gore and scenes that are so intense they make you want to spill your snacks, but it’s not something I'd choose to watch again. Despite having very little money to work with, the director still finds ways to be repulsive rather than frightening, and there isn’t much in this film that truly creates fear or suspense. Some scenes even come close to being comical. Bruce Campbell does his best, and his performance is enough to secure him the lead role because the rest of the actors aren't particularly skilled. The actor isn’t without some ability, but he seems content with doing just this kind of thing, over and over. It should be obvious that the other performers don’t really warrant a mention here; they are either complete beginners or seem to have made poor choices in their careers. And naturally, the Necronomicon, a book conjured up from the imagination of H. P. Lovecraft, plays an important part in the story and looks pretty intimidating. Amidst all this chaotic mess, what redeems the film somewhat is how Raimi explores low-budget visual effects and the results he can achieve with them. We’ve got buckets of paint, raspberry juice, odd synthetic makeup that resembles carnival masks—pretty much everything you could imagine.
