I’m not usually drawn to slasher or gore films, but I was encouraged to watch this one because it doesn't seem to be trying for deep seriousness. Even with all the bloodshed, it never felt very believable, and that actually contributes to the darkly humorous tone of everything. What initially caught my attention was Bruce Campbell’s performance as the lead character, Ash. He isn't a particularly skilled actor, but he possesses an appealing youthful quality that helps keep the film moving forward, even though the writing feels dated and awkward. It's clear this movie was made with very limited funds, and the special effects—without any computer-generated imagery—aren’t top-notch. However, it doesn't detract from the experience because you’re simply along for the journey; in fact, there are some genuinely impressive effects scattered throughout. The camera perspective using a first-person view of the Evil Spirit in the Woods is also executed quite well. Excellent!
