The assumption that Hollywood horror had moved past relying on excessive, unnecessary displays of brutality against women as a substitute for weak writing and originality turns out to be incorrect. Sam Raimi (producer), Sébastien Vanicek (writer-director), and Florent Bernardand (writer) have produced another installment in the Evil Dead franchise that is shockingly uninspired. I’ve encountered numerous low-budget horror films offering more imaginative plots and genuinely engaging experiences than this one provided. The sheer volume of graphic violence inflicted upon women, including a young girl, leads to speculation about the personal lives of the male filmmakers—perhaps a painful separation from a female partner influenced their work, or possibly they harbor deep-seated animosity toward women. It’s not improved by the fact that all this brutality is presented within a predictable and cliché narrative concerning domestic abuse, seemingly intended to excuse the violence itself. This is particularly disheartening considering the inventiveness and depth of the previous film, Evil Dead Rise. Ultimately, those seeking horror films with substance will find this one a waste of time. It’s best to avoid it entirely. However, if you enjoy extreme levels of senseless gore and violence unsupported by any meaningful script, then feel free to watch it. My rating should make my preference clear.
