The topic of assisted suicide and the right to die has been the subject of considerable discussion for many years, with advocates presenting compelling reasons for their positions. Several films have tackled this sensitive subject before, including “Blackbird,” “You Don’t Know Jack,” “Whose Life Is It, Anyway?” and “The Barbarian Invasions.” Now, François Ozon has contributed a new film to that conversation. This drama, based on true events, centers on an older French man recovering from a stroke who requests his daughter's assistance in ending his life. The movie explores the legal, medical, emotional and ethical aspects of such a difficult decision with honesty, genuineness and genuine emotion. It represents some of the best and most approachable work from a filmmaker whose other projects I often find disappointing. Despite this, it’s not flawless; there are loose ends in certain storylines, occasionally unusual camera angles, and narrative components that seem unnecessary. Nevertheless, “Everything Went Fine” possesses many strengths, including strong performances from Sophie Marceau, André Dussellier and Géraldine Pailhas, a detailed screenplay, consistent rhythm, appropriately timed moments of humor, and emotional depth without resorting to sentimentality. If you're willing to overlook some minor flaws, it provides a moving and thought-provoking experience and prompts reflection on knowing when to remain and when to leave.
