A Chinese immigrant’s journey through various universes forms the basis of this unusual and bizarre story. The film felt reminiscent of "Doctor Strange 2," sharing similarities in its depiction of different worlds, characters, and strange occurrences; it could almost be called a multiverse of madness. While many people and critics praised this movie, I found it enjoyable but also excessively long and drawn out. There's a meaningful theme about self-discovery—a sense of importance followed by the realization that we may not be as significant as we think in the grand scheme of things. The film explores powerful emotions through the story of a mother and daughter and their familial love, though it occasionally veered into unexpected comedic territory, which detracted from those emotional moments. Some scenes were intended to be humorous and did elicit laughter from viewers, but others felt distasteful and off-putting. Despite being one of the best films of 2022, it would have benefited from a more even blend of comedy and drama. The concept is comparable to "The Matrix," where someone can access another world through their mind; here, that idea expands to multiple universes, showcasing various possibilities. This exploration of personal choices and the notion that other versions of ourselves exist in different universes making different decisions is inventive. However, I was disappointed by the comedic elements at inopportune times—there were genuinely moving emotional scenes and well-written dialogue that felt undermined by the humor, giving it a feel similar to some Marvel films. The cinematography, editing, and music were all excellent and vital to the film’s narrative. The scene involving the rocks was particularly striking, beautiful, profound, and touching, yet the director chose to incorporate what I considered inappropriate and jarring comedic elements. I am aware that this movie benefited from Hollywood promotion, which likely contributed to its high ratings, but overall, there were aspects of it that I appreciated alongside those that didn't quite work for me.
