This film feels like a reimagining of THE MATRIX (1999), but geared toward people who've grown up online. It deals with feelings of meaninglessness in contemporary society, much like SORRY TO BOTHER YOU (2018) explores issues related to capitalism and race—by presenting the problems within those systems through a lens of wild absurdity, which is really well done. Considering how complex it is, I’m honestly amazed by the technical aspects; just imagining what it must have been like during post-production makes my head spin. The visuals are surprisingly unified considering the frenetic style the narrative requires, and it consistently looks fantastic. Everything—the set design, lighting, wardrobe, special effects—is exceptional and a pleasure to experience. The acting is also superb; the central performers all deliver strong performances. It's funny, gorgeous, impactful, compassionate, and full of energy. I’m really happy I saw it on the big screen! I especially want to acknowledge Jenny Slate’s dog and Randy Newman’s raccoon for making my life better.
