Michelle Yeoh ("Evelyn") and Jamie Lee Curtis ("Deirdre") both gave performances I really enjoyed in this diverting and unusual film exploring the current trend of multiverse stories. Yeoh plays a woman struggling to keep her failing laundry business afloat when she encounters the stern presence of an IRS agent, played by Curtis. Her difficulties are compounded by her well-meaning but ineffective husband "Waymond" (Ke Huy Quan), her daughter "Joy" who has recently come out as lesbian ("Joy," Stephanie Hsu), and her critical father "Gong Gong" (James Hong). It seems this woman is beset on all sides with problems. Then unexpectedly, a tear appears—and in the spirit of Lewis Carroll, "Evelyn" discovers she's been transported to multiple realities where she possesses abilities ranging from superpowers to the responsibility of preventing the destruction of existence itself. Attempting to make sense of the storyline proves difficult; it jumps around, shifts direction, and wanders without much clear progression for the audience. Despite this, it’s a remarkable showcase for Yeoh's talent, with strong direction and writing—often quite funny—that poses as many questions as it tries to dodge. The title is fitting, and you really need to pay close attention to fully appreciate this collection of seemingly absurd but often touching adventures that examine what might bring fulfillment to "Evelyn’s" life. I would suggest watching it again; there's a lot more to discover once you adjust after the initial viewing, and seeing it on a large screen highlights some impressive visual effects that don't overshadow the film's focus on its characters.
