Just as they’re about to begin college, their youthful energy really comes out! It's a more accessible and clever take on 'Animal House'. The movie is set in the mid-80s, just three days before classes start. We follow Jake, a baseball pitcher who’s entering college, as he meets his new teammates and housemates, and also befriends a girl. It centers around the guys' antics right before school begins—the girls, parties, video games, dares, and all that goes with it as they leave their mark. It’s a really enjoyable film; the humor stays appropriate. Usually, American teen or college comedies are full of adult jokes and feel pretty unrealistic, but this one feels genuine while still being visually engaging enough to keep you watching until the very end. The actors were all great—it seems like many of them are making their debut on screen, or at least that’s my impression. I bet a lot of them will become stars someday. It's another strong film from Richard Linklater, and he wrote the screenplay too. He says it’s a spiritual sequel to his earlier films 'Dazed and Confused' and 'Boyhood'. I’ve seen one already, and I plan to watch the other soon because I’m starting to appreciate this filmmaker and his style. I was really struck by how the characters and scenes unfolded. Everything felt simple and familiar, but it was still a lot of fun to watch. The dynamic between the older students and the new freshmen isn't portrayed as bullying, but more like an understandable give-and-take that’s amusing. The 80s setting was really well done, almost perfect. The opening scene gave me a jolt, but then the rest of the movie took a completely different turn. Without any big names attached, this film didn't do well in theaters, but I think it will eventually find its audience. If you’re looking for something different, I recommend giving this comedy a try. _7.5/10_
