“Charlie” shares a single room with his mother and four grandparents, all sleeping together in the same bed and living on cabbage soup! Then the chocolatier himself announces an incredible opportunity: five golden tickets are hidden inside ten million chocolate bars. The finder of one of these tickets wins a tour of the factory. Given that Charlie’s family doesn't have much money, his odds aren't great, especially when he sees spoiled and unpleasant kids—along with their equally awful parents—grabbing all the tickets on television. What are the chances that a bar bought with found money will be the lucky one? That part of the story isn't exactly surprising, but before Charlie and “Grandpa Joe” (Jack Albertson) get there, he receives an odd suggestion from rival "Slugworth." Then appears a man in a purple velvet suit and a large hat—that’s the wonderfully strange "Wonka" (Gene Wilder), who speaks in a peculiar way and promises them an amazing adventure! There's something like a moral lesson to be found in what happens next, as the children are tested and fail because of their own bad behavior. The occasionally frightening “Wonka” makes sure that those who deserve it get exactly what they deserve. "Veruca Salt" (Julie Dawn Cole) was definitely my top pick for someone deserving to be thrown out with the trash, though “Mike Teevee” (Paris Themmen) wasn’t far behind. As we move through the factory, we meet the mysterious "Oompa Loompa" people who keep things running and help him make perfect chocolate. The real question is: will Charlie and Joe survive the challenges of this trip? Wilder is excellent here as he leads them through a moral puzzle that's just as sweet as the candy itself, and Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley have written some of the best songs ever put on film. “Pure Imagination,” “The Candy Man,” and the irritatingly catchy "I Want it Now" from the appropriately named "Veruca" all contribute to a vibrant, acrobatic, and magical story about honesty and goodness that’s hard not to enjoy. Maybe Roy Kinnear should have thought about avoiding being born?
