It’s noticeably superior to the Johnny Depp adaptation, mostly because this one manages to be enjoyable and amusing, unlike the previous film which felt overly serious due to Tim Burton's involvement. While it might not be as visually impressive, it compensates with genuine warmth, some memorable songs, and a central character who is consistently entertaining. Gene Wilder’s portrayal really works without venturing into unsettling territory. It’s easy to miss initially, but he navigated a delicate balance to appear eccentric and amusing while avoiding creepiness, and he succeeded admirably. I didn't give it much thought when I was younger, but now, particularly after seeing Burton’s version, it seems clear that Wilder deserved an Oscar for his work. It certainly felt like Academy Award material, especially considering the awards were more meaningful back in 1971. Aside from Gene’s exceptional performance, this is simply a delightful film that families should experience and which definitely deserves greater recognition compared to the remake.
