He seems to be devoting an excessive amount of time to Clyde. Every Which Way But Loose is the work of director James Fargo and writer Jeremy Joe Kronsberg. The cast includes Clint Eastwood, Sondra Locke, Geoffrey Lewis, Beverly D'Angelo, and Manis The Orangutan. The studio executives were taken aback, even concerned about its release, but the story of Philo Beddoe (Eastwood) and his pet orangutan turned out to be a significant success financially. Beddoe is a trucker who also earns money through bare-knuckle fighting, at which he excels. Clyde the orangutan has a distinct personality all his own, and together they find themselves pursued by angry police officers and an extremely unskilled motorcycle gang. Philo's brother Orville (Lewis) joins them on their journey, while contrasting romantic interests emerge in the form of Lynn Halsey-Taylor (Locke) and Echo (D’Angelo). The storyline is quite simple; essentially, we are watching a collection of incidents designed to elicit laughs—and they do. The action arises from the fights Philo gets into, with Eastwood consistently demonstrating himself to be one of the most capable actors when it comes to throwing punches, while Lewis stands out as Philo’s friend and voice of reason. The romantic subplot involving Lynn and Philo—along with what is later revealed—feels somewhat disconnected, given that this is such a laid-back comedy. The filmmakers understand their purpose; they are enjoying themselves, and invite the audience to do the same. Viewers embraced it wholeheartedly, leading to a sequel built on similar themes, which was also well-received because it offered more of what made the first film enjoyable. Just relax, open a beer and some popcorn, and go with it; it wasn't intended to be anything profound. 7/10
