The film recounts a true story, presenting a visually appealing depiction of Rob Hall (played by Jason Clarke), a New Zealander who operated an agency guiding affluent climbers up Mount Everest. In 1996, he partnered with Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal), a skilled but somewhat mysterious mountaineer. The narrative that follows feels like a straightforward sequence of events as the mountain itself seems to rebel against these intrusive humans, responding forcefully and definitively. This brings us to one of the film’s shortcomings: the characters feel underdeveloped. I didn't gain much insight into any of them, and I honestly couldn’t muster much concern for their fates, particularly when it came to Gyllenhaal’s character. Perhaps that reflects well on the actors—some successfully conveying a sense of self-satisfaction and arrogance that felt like they deserved what was coming—but overall, the writing and story lacked depth. The cinematography is remarkable, capturing the reality of the Nepalese base camps and the seemingly gentle appearance of the mountain itself. While there’s a decent supporting cast, they too fail to add much in terms of personality or provide a genuine sense of the danger, cooperation, and fellowship that likely existed in real life. It's worth watching for the visuals, and it serves as a reminder of humanity’s smallness when the planet decides to assert itself, but as a drama, it simply feels too weak.
