Stanley Baker, portraying "Tyvian," embodies a hardscrabble background from Wales’ mining community and is also the author of a globally successful book. His experience takes an unexpected turn when he arrives in Venice, where he feels completely out of place and becomes entangled with the enigmatic Jeanne Moreau ("Eve"). She skillfully manipulates him, leaving him powerless against her influence. While the film boasts stunning location cinematography, I ultimately felt it was somewhat pretentious. The two main characters seem to represent the most unpleasant aspects of one another—and society as a whole. Virna Lisi, playing "Francesca," his neglected fiancée, is likely the only character you might feel sympathy for; she’d probably be better off leaving both of them and investigating the glassmaking on Murano island instead. It offers an intriguing glimpse into Venetian life during the early 1960s, but otherwise, Joseph Losey seems to have let his artistic license run a bit too far.
