Going into this movie, I didn’t have high hopes for anything particularly original or surprising—and that expectation was confirmed, as is often the case with movies from Marvel. The filmmakers chose to stick with familiar patterns, opting for a straightforward approach: heroes versus villains battling for the survival of all people. The story centers on a god who dispatches teams of superheroes with special abilities to defend intelligent life across various planets against dangerous creatures that look like prehistoric reptiles. They’re largely successful in their mission, but it becomes apparent that they were confronting the wrong threat and the real conflict is yet to come. The initial portion of the film, roughly the first hour, consists primarily of exposition and flashbacks, though things pick up considerably toward the end with a large-scale confrontation between good and evil. There’s no overarching enigma at play; everything is fairly obvious from the start, and even minor surprises can be anticipated beforehand. Based on how the movie concludes, it seems likely that we'll get more installments exploring this storyline, possibly several.
