Will Wernick's Escape Room (2017) had an interesting idea at its heart, but ultimately squanders it with uninspired filmmaking. The film has problems from the very beginning; the initial portion crawls along and doesn’t do much to get you invested or create a sense of anticipation. I often found the characters’ choices to be strange and contrived, which made it difficult to become involved in what they were going through or feel like there was anything important at risk. Although the escape room idea had promise for some inventive moments and suspense, the way it's handled and how quickly things move just don’t work out, leaving everything feeling dull and lacking imagination. The movie's look doesn't improve things either. The visuals and set design are pretty ordinary, not having the refinement or cleverness you would anticipate from a film so reliant on its surroundings. It was obvious that they didn't have a lot of money to spend, but I wish there had been more ingenuity in finding ways around those limitations. Ultimately, it’s something you won’t remember for long because it doesn't live up to what it could have been.
