It's an acceptable film, though I doubt I’ll revisit it, and I can’t really suggest others check it out. I do enjoy the movie itself, but its central idea is ambitious yet poorly realized, even with its impressive visuals and production quality. Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart are what hold the picture together; as for those who criticize her performance, she's portraying a character meant to suppress emotion. The supporting cast also includes some good actors: Guy Pearce (from *Memento*), Bel Powley (*Carrie Pilby), and David Selby—I was so convinced it was Alan Alda from *MASH*, I genuinely thought I heard his voice. The problem is that watching a film about people who are robots without feelings isn’t always captivating, despite the interesting premise, particularly when it shifts into a survival story. Those unable to control their emotions and act like they don't have them are sent somewhere where they face electroshock treatment leading to suicide if they haven’t already ended things themselves. The suspense does build somewhat, but eventually the focus drifts toward a romantic relationship instead of survival, even during a sequence meant to be about surviving. The final scenes are quite understated; I needed to watch them again just to confirm how it resolved. Even though I found aspects to appreciate, I suspect fewer people will connect with this film than those who do.
