The film centers on a woman’s solitary existence as she gathers simple environmental information on an island situated off the Cornish coast. Evidence suggests the island was once used for mining, with remnants of mines and workings contributing to an unsettling atmosphere amplified by persistent wind and crashing waves. Her daily life is highly structured, but over time it becomes apparent that both the island and the woman—played by Mary Woodvine—have experienced hardship. Director Mark Jenkin unfolds the story deliberately, gradually revealing details about what led this woman to such a remote and desolate location. I found the film’s slow, repetitive pace challenging. Certain scenes and actions are repeated, and while the plot does progress little by little, it doesn't feel like much happens overall. It evokes elements of an early "Poldark" installment combined with the "Dr. Who - Stones of Blood" series from 1978. To its credit, the film authentically captures a 1973 aesthetic, and the sound design along with some infrequent visual effects contribute to a subtle sense of mystery and sadness; however, I ultimately found it somewhat underwhelming. It’s worth seeing once, but not something I'm eager to revisit.
