This movie about a heist features Sean Connery, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Catherine's rear end. Gin, an insurance agent who also has the skills of a cat burglar (played by Catherine Zeta-Jones), is sent by her boss (Will Patton) to get close to aging British thief “Mac” MacDougal (Sean Connery). He agrees to let her in but insists on rigorous training before they attempt to steal a valuable Chinese mask from Bedford Palace, which has tight security. Their growing attraction and distrust threaten their partnership, but the possibility of getting $8 billion by robbing the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, keeps them working together. I typically don’t care for movies about heists—I'm not keen on celebrating criminals—but Connery’s charm and Zeta-Jones’ beauty make “Entrapment” (1999) engaging, along with the overall stylish and energetic filmmaking. Mac's hideout, a secluded castle in Scotland, is an unexpected draw. The film shares similarities in tone with "Eye of the Beholder" (1999), but without that sense of darkness and sleaziness. The first 70 minutes are surprisingly enjoyable before it loses steam for about 20 minutes; thankfully, it picks up again for a thrilling and complicated final act. “Entrapment” is known for memorable shots of Catherine performing acrobatic moves while navigating a laser security system, which highlight her figure. It’s hard to call these scenes pornographic, though, because she's fully clothed, even if the outfit is form-fitting rather than completely tight. There was some discussion about the questionable attraction between Mac (Connery) and Gin (Zeta-Jones). Connery was 68 when "Entrapment" was filmed, but his character is 60 in the story. Catherine was nearly 30 during filming, but looks and acts older, around 35. So their age difference is about 25 years, which isn’t unusual. Men are naturally drawn to younger women, and Gin is a confident and capable woman, not a teenager or even in her early twenties. Mac might have been 60, but he was charismatic, intelligent, vigorous, and very young at heart; so it's easy to see why she would be attracted to him. Being attracted to someone doesn’t mean you want to marry them or have sex. You can feel naturally drawn to a person, but decide against anything further for many reasons—perhaps you're married, they are married, they’re too young, they’re too old, you prefer being single, etc. The film is 1 hour and 53 minutes long and was filmed in England, Scotland (Duart Castle & Eilean Donan Castle), Malaysia, and New York City. Ving Rhames also appears as Mac's secret partner. GRADE: B
