Enigma presents itself as an involved spy story, featuring several unexpected developments. The Central Intelligence Agency discovers that the Soviets are intending to eliminate five individuals seeking asylum on Christmas Day. To retrieve a device used by the Soviets for secure communication—the scrambler for the Enigma machine—they enlist Holbeck (Martin Sheen), a previous defector, and send him into East Berlin. During his mission, Holbeck finds that both the KGB and the government of East Germany are aware of his presence. He reconnects with people from his past, including his former lover, Karen Reinhardt (Brigitte Fossey), who assists him in completing his assignment. Dimitri Vasilikov, a KGB operative portrayed by Sam Neill, becomes involved with Reinhardt, suggesting a real connection between them. Simultaneously, it appears the CIA has been manipulating Holbeck. The film functions as a skillfully crafted thriller that improves as it progresses; however, understanding everything can be challenging and there are some awkward moments throughout.
