Amy Adams delivers a genuinely amusing performance in this updated version of the "Snow White" story. “Giselle” falls victim to the scheming Queen "Narissa," played briefly by Susan Sarandon, who desires both her power and beauty. Giselle unexpectedly emerges from a manhole cover into modern-day New York City, still dressed as if attending a children's fairytale celebration. She quickly forms a bond with "Robert" (Patrick Dempsey) and his daughter, "Morgan" (Rachel Covey). Initially questioning her sanity, Robert’s perspective shifts when Prince “Edward” (James Marsden), along with Edward’s cunning butler "Nathaniel" (Timothy Spall), arrives in pursuit of Giselle—revealing to him that he is developing feelings for the young woman, encouraged by his daughter. The central question becomes who will ultimately capture her affection. Will they be able to return to their kingdom of “Adalasia”? I would have appreciated a bit more energy and vibrancy throughout, but as it stands, this is a swiftly moving and pleasant family film with a good connection between Adams and Dempsey, though he seems somewhat stiff. Marsden steals the show for me; he skillfully portrays the character of an overly polite fool at times, and Spall consistently excels in these understated, deferential roles. Idina Menzel appears, but doesn't get to showcase any soaring vocals—the soundtrack, nominated for three Oscars, isn’t one of Alan Menken’s most memorable works, in my opinion. Perhaps it runs a tad too long, but overall, it's quite an imaginative reimagining of the original tale and provides a lighthearted viewing experience.
