I’ve always been drawn in by enjoyable romantic comedies. A talented group of actors portrays a story about four women who lease an Italian castle as a way to get away from their unexciting routines. I won't name all of the performers that contribute so much to its appeal. Even some characters that I initially wanted to dislike were developed with enough detail that I became invested in each one’s journey. The narrative shifts between individual storylines and scenes showing different groups together. I am familiar with the original book this film is adapted from, and I appreciate a few of the alterations they made. It just occurred to me while researching it that this is actually a reimagining of a 1935 sound film. It’s a gentle and understated movie; in fact, I was somewhat taken aback to learn that it received several Oscar nominations and also took home some Golden Globe awards. It has been quite a long time since I managed to find a DVD copy of this, allowing me to finally get rid of the old, blurry VHS version I had.
