I’m not especially keen on Jane Austen—and in my view, "Emma" isn't one of her most captivating works. Gwyneth Paltrow portrays the central figure, a young woman who seems rather oblivious and spends an excessive amount of time inserting herself into other people's affairs, often with questionable motives, frequently causing emotional upset as a result. Jeremy Northam, playing “Mr. Knightley,” is the only one willing to be direct with her, urging her to reconsider her interference and recognize the love that’s right in front of her—before it disappears. Paltrow does an acceptable job, especially since this version isn't as dense as the book itself. Northam possesses a likeability and sense of what’s right that makes him appealing (though I honestly can’t figure out what he finds attractive about “Emma”—beyond looks). Alan Cummings, Juliet Stevenson, and Phyllida Law, who is exceptionally good as the long-suffering "Mrs. Bates," all deliver commendable performances. Rachel Portman's score is pleasant and understated, complementing this visually appealing drama, but it felt a bit too much like Merchant Ivory for my taste—lacking the vibrancy or polish of other productions.
