Emma Mackey delivers a noteworthy performance in this portrayal of Emily Brontë’s life and romantic relationships. The film depicts her as an introverted woman who feels overshadowed by her accomplished sister Charlotte (Alexandra Dowling), with her somewhat unpredictable brother Bramwell (Fionn Whitehead) also present, along with their stern father Patrick (Adrian Dunbar). It's important to recall the era in which this is set, when women had limited options, and her father envisioned a similar career path for her as her sister. The arrival of curate "Weightman" (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) sparks feelings among several characters, and after an awkward beginning, he and Emily start to connect. Visually, it’s a striking film, filmed on the Brontë family's original property in West Yorkshire; combined with frequent thunder and rain, the setting effectively conveys what life was like for this family in rural 19th-century England. The actors have good chemistry, especially Mackey and Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and there isn’t much dialogue. The narrative focuses on Emily as a person rather than her writing, unfolding through a blend of an impactful musical score, desolate landscapes, occasional humor—often stemming from Bramwell's behavior—and the audience’s own interpretation, setting it apart from many other biographical dramas set in similar periods. I didn’t find the tempo to be an issue, although it is deliberate and unfolds gradually; viewers shouldn't anticipate immediate action. Nevertheless, I appreciated this thoughtful and detailed representation that feels believable, touching on themes of love and mortality.
