The film Emily the Criminal had some genuinely strong points thanks to a captivating narrative and Aubrey Plaza’s dedicated portrayal of her role, though stretches of slower pacing and a disheartening resolution held it back somewhat. Emily the Criminal tells the story of a woman facing an uphill battle to secure work while dealing with the significant obstacle of a past criminal record. When legitimate options appear unavailable, she resorts to a more profitable but unlawful way to make money. The progression of her involvement in credit card fraud was compelling, highlighting both the risks inherent in this new line of work and the stress of evading capture. However, the story’s rhythm wasn't consistent; there were periods of captivating and thrilling action interspersed with longer segments that felt drawn out and less absorbing. The significance of the title became clearer as the movie unfolded alongside the characters' development, but ultimately, the ending left me feeling downcast. The evolution of her character seemed to come at a cost to others, which prevented me from celebrating the outcome.
