Emily the Criminal offers an insightful portrayal of how far someone might go to escape overwhelming student loan burdens. I found myself enjoying the film quite a bit; Aubrey Plaza delivers a wonderful performance as the central character, and she really elevated the movie, making it very enjoyable to watch. The narrative touches upon themes that many millennials will find familiar, and it does so in an authentic way. While the plot is well-constructed, much of what happens is already shown in the trailers, which was somewhat underwhelming. At times, I struggled to accept how easily she managed to evade detection while engaging in all her illicit actions, but I was able to set aside my doubts and still have a worthwhile experience.
