It’s an agreeable film that holds up to viewing. I do think *Emil and the Detectives* possessed the potential for something grander, as there are several strong elements at play. Nevertheless, it does have its merits. The visuals are a definite strength, with some striking scenes of 1960s Berlin. The humor is also quite good. The performances are where the film falls short, not due to the actors themselves, but because of the characters and their arcs. Heinz Schubert, Walter Slezak, and Peter Ehrlich are appropriate for their roles as Grundeis, The Baron, and Müller, respectively; however, they don’t truly reach their full potential. I would have liked to see more from this group. The young actors also feel somewhat wasted—there are quite a few of them, perhaps too many—as most, apart from Emil (Bryan Russell) and Gustav (Roger Mobley), receive little development or substantial screen time. The story itself is enjoyable, but like other aspects I’ve mentioned, it feels restrained and unremarkable. It really could have been more ambitious. Despite that, I did find it to be a reasonably pleasant experience.
