The film manages to mix pointed observations about society with dark humor that doesn't always feel quite right, though it’s really the gripping, intensely suspenseful narrative—and how believable it feels—that holds your attention. KD Dávila wrote a script that prompts reflection, using ironic jokes and starting with an uncomplicated idea that develops into a disturbing story centered on race. Donald Elise Watkins and RJ Cyler both deliver strong performances as the central characters, and Carey Williams guides them through increasingly fraught situations leading to a very affecting and suspenseful ending. It might seem like just another tale to some viewers, but unfortunately, reality isn’t distant from fiction anymore. Rating: B+
