It's clear that Neill Blomkamp reused some “District 9” set designs for this science fiction story, but sadly, there’s more than just that which feels familiar. Earth has become the domain of those considered lower class, while an orbiting space station houses the privileged elite, boasting technology sustaining life and featuring landscapes like lakes, rivers, hills, trees, and flowers. The people living in space are insistent on keeping everyone else away and have established complex security measures – overseen by “Delacourt” (Jodie Foster), a cold and impeccably styled commander who utilizes ships, robots, and hired soldiers to enforce her will. Among the ruins below exists "Max" (Matt Damon), and when he’s exposed to dangerous radiation, his only chance for survival appears to be participating in a clever scheme to strike at “Elysium.” Of course, not directly – instead, the plan involves seizing one of their defense contractors who has downloaded vital data into his mind; information capable of disrupting their exclusive paradise. Damon doesn't entirely come across as believable in an action role, but Foster delivers a stronger performance as the manipulative antagonist, and Sharlto Copley provides an over-the-top portrayal reminiscent of “Mad Max.” The film is full of explosions and action sequences involving people, vehicles, and robots as the plot moves toward space. While the narrative follows a familiar path, it’s just as thrilling as anything Marvel consistently produces each year. It's fundamentally a conflict between two groups, highlighting humanity’s capacity for devising schemes, and this aspect is presented effectively.
