It's surprising that an English-language version of this narrative hasn’t appeared before, because it seems like a genuinely affecting and moving love story. The film unfolds against a backdrop of bright scenery and expansive fields, introducing us to the affluent young lieutenant “Sixten” (Thommy Berggren), who is contentedly married with two children. That changes when he encounters the celebrated tightrope walker “Hedvig,” also known as “Elvira” (Pia Degermark), and finds himself falling deeply in love with her. He’s consumed by his feelings, and it's clear that she feels similarly. It shouldn’t require much thought to realize that in 19th-century Sweden, while attractive officers from privileged backgrounds might have been able to avoid consequences for many actions, they couldn’t simply leave their responsibilities—their family—and run off with a woman of questionable reputation. The decisions they face will inevitably create hardship for them, as he comes to realize he lacks any real skills and they both find themselves rejected by a disapproving community. The central question is that familiar “can true love overcome everything” trope, and truthfully there isn’t a great deal of depth to the plot itself; however, the ending is quite powerful (and somewhat open to interpretation), and with beautiful cinematography throughout, set to music by Mozart and Vivaldi, it's a slowly developing story that has the potential to touch even those who are typically unyielding, as sunlight catches on pollen and attractive individuals attempt to live life according to their own desires.
