Reese Witherspoon ("Tracy Flick") portrays a character intensely driven to become her high school’s class President. She's intelligent, calculating, and unwavering in her pursuit of victory, presenting a significant obstacle for anyone who opposes her. Matthew Broderick plays the somewhat bewildered teacher tasked with managing the election, and recognizing the problematic nature of his favored candidate, he persuades Chris Klein, a popular student recovering from an injury ("Paul"), to run against her. Despite lacking intellectual depth, this newcomer proves to be a considerable threat to "Flick," especially given that many other students seem similarly unperceptive. The ensuing competition between her manipulative strategies and his efforts to thwart them provides roughly an hour and forty minutes of entertainment. While the language occasionally becomes blunt, viewers shouldn't anticipate intricate plot developments or a deeply insightful screenplay—with one possible exception: it offers a commentary on the unpleasantness of unchecked ambition, and maybe, three decades removed from its release, serves as a mild warning that if we ignore our democratic duties, we risk ending up with individuals like this in positions of power. Klein delivers a solid performance as the well-meaning but not overly bright "Paul" as well.
