This 1992 film marks Robert Rodriguez’s first directorial effort and centers on a guitar player who arrives in town coinciding with a bar shootout involving a gangster and similarly dressed individuals. Initially, the situation seems like a simple case of mistaken identity, but it appears the Mariachi musician gradually accepts the part of an outlaw assassin eliminating those controlling the area—or at least that’s what he assumes. The story also involves him falling for the crime boss's daughter. I experienced this film as poetic, romantic, and tragic simultaneously, finding a particular scene amusing where the character is placed in a Domino’s tub while a woman points a gun at him, compelling him to sing a song that was apparently both original and suggestive. The cast included Carlos Gallardo, Consuelo Gomez, Peter Marquardt, and Reinol Martinez. It offers an intriguing perspective on what seems like a disorganized criminal network, presenting a straightforward portrayal of everyday life within the constraints of its independent production style. I think it moves along well considering how little money they had to work with, and I suggest giving it a viewing.
