This is assuredly among Howard Hawks' stronger pairings with John Wayne. The film tells a solid story concerning a rancher and his kin attempting to stand against the grasping and ruthless Ed Asner ("Bart Jason"), who’s determined to seize control of everything within reach. It shares some elements with "Rio Bravo" (1959), but I feel that the rapport between Wayne ("Thornton") and Robert Mitchum, portraying a down-and-out sheriff (“JP Harrah”), is more evident here. James Caan contributes a playful quality to his character as the poetry-reciting and shotgun-wielding "Mississippi," while Arthur Hunnicutt capably fills the familiar supporting role—frequently embodied by Walter Brennan—as “Bull,” complete with his dented bugle. As is typical of these kinds of movies, the female characters are given very little to do, and that holds true for Charlene Holt ("Maudie") as well. There’s a good amount of action sequences throughout, showcasing both leads performing effectively together, along with Caan injecting some lightheartedness. It's an enjoyable experience overall.
