Does one suspect politicians are simply vampires in another form? El Conde presents an inventive story combining vampire lore with political biography. The film references two prominent conservative figures—Augusto Pinochet, the former Chilean dictator, and Margaret Thatcher, from British politics. It’s a strange but engaging viewing experience, occasionally harsh, and strikingly beautiful to look at. While not flawless, it begins and concludes in a manner that skillfully ties together the narrative elements. The middle section sometimes feels scattered and unfocused, lacking a clear contextual connection. Ultimately, this is an exceptionally original and thought-provoking film noir that lingers in your mind after the credits roll. Its aspirations exceed its successes; however, what it does accomplish is worthwhile.
