The film *El Cid* recounts the narrative of Rodrigo Diaz, a figure whose courage and moral principles helped his nation repel Moorish invaders from Spain. What I appreciate most about this movie is that despite its nearly three-hour length, I didn’t once check the time. It's a captivating production with all the expected qualities of an expansive historical epic. The visuals, the costumes, the grand scale, and the director Anthony Mann’s meticulousness are exceptional, as is Miklos Rozsa’s stirring musical score. Charlton Heston, with his imposing physique, embodies Diaz and further establishes himself as the ideal actor for large-scale historical films. Supporting him are Sophia Loren, Genevieve Page, Raf Vallone, John Fraser (who delivers a strong performance), and Gary Raymond (also very good). The story is compelling because Diaz was an admirable figure in Spanish history, bringing together the hesitant Christian rulers of Spain while inspiring ordinary people to believe in their cause. However, it’s not without its flaws; even acknowledging the typical Hollywood embellishments, the film presents *El Cid* as a glorified and somewhat sanitized account. It seems unlikely that his journey during the 11th century would have been so free of hardship and violence. There's a lack of grit where there should be sharper edges, which diminishes the impact of the film’s conclusion because his rise to heroism felt surprisingly effortless—more like an easy walk than a difficult climb. Despite this, it remains a fine movie that fulfills all the requirements of its genre. As cynical as I may be about the way *El Cid*'s story is portrayed here, I was still enthusiastically applauding and celebrating as the credits appeared, and not even Sophia Loren’s expression could detract from the feeling of excitement and warmth that washed over me. It earns a rating of 8/10.
