It's unusual to encounter a film as unbelievable, scattered, and rambling as director William Oldroyd’s follow-up to his earlier success, “Lady Macbeth.” Following that promising first work, he seems to have lost his way with this latest attempt, advertised as a psychological mystery/thriller that fails to gain momentum but still manages to veer dramatically off course toward the end. The film explores the connection forming between two women working at a young men’s prison in 1960s Massachusetts. Eileen, portrayed by Thomasin McKenzie, is shy, uncomfortable, frequently targeted, and sexually inhibited; she holds an administrative position. Anne Hathaway plays Rebecca, the facility's recently employed psychologist, who is polished, experienced, and a Harvard graduate. They develop a close but somewhat surprising friendship with hints of sexuality that don’t lead anywhere. This feeling arises largely because the two main characters become entangled in a far-fetched plan reminiscent of Lucy and Ethel, only with serious consequences; it's an unexpected development that throws the story into baffling territory. Although the film boasts attractive production design, inventive cinematography, and strong supporting performances—Hathaway and Marin Ireland both received Independent Spirit Award nominations—there’s little else here to hold your attention or prove worthwhile, qualities vital for a compelling mystery/thriller. Whatever the director intended remains unrealized, whether due to a flawed script or inadequate direction (or perhaps a combination of both). It's one of those instances where it would have been better if the entire project had simply remained unfinished during editing.
